Mexico's president urges Hispanics in U.S. to reject anti-immigration candidates

May 26, 2023

Mexico City [Mexico], May 26: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday urged the Hispanic community in the United States not to vote for anti-immigration candidates, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
"Do not vote for those who persecute migrants or don't respect them, because the migrant, as the Bible says, deserves respect," the president said during his daily press conference at the National Palace here.
On Wednesday, DeSantis announced his intention to seek the U.S. Republican Party presidential nomination for the November 2024 elections.
DeSantis has seized on such issues as immigration and drug trafficking to drum up support among U.S. conservatives, but scapegoating migrants is just an electoral ploy, said Lopez Obrador.
"Ask DeSantis because ... as they are very hypocritical, he might have migrants working for him," said the president.
The U.S. government has blamed Mexico for the fentanyl crisis in the United States, claiming that migrants are helping to smuggle illicit drugs.
Mexico's government accused the United States of not doing enough to combat drug abuse, especially among youth.
