Zelensky criticizes Hungary on blocking Ukraine's EU entry

Mar 21, 2025

Brussels [Belgium], March 21: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday indirectly criticized Hungary's blockade of his country's accession to the European Union, saying it is "anti-European" for one person to block decisions affecting everyone on the continent.
"It's simply anti-European when one person blocks decisions that are important for the entire continent or that have already been agreed upon," he said in a video link to the summit of EU leaders in Brussels.
Zelensky did not mention any country by name, but Hungary had recently prevented joint EU statements on Ukraine. In addition, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly criticized the EU's accession talks with Ukraine.
The EU opened accession negotiations with Ukraine last year. But Zelensky said that while Ukraine has fulfilled the requirements for further talks, there were considerable difficulties in making headway.
Warning against empty promises from Moscow The Ukrainian leader also warned that Russia cannot be trusted.
Moscow often promises something and a few hours later it means nothing, he said, adding that this is why international pressure on Russia must be maintained despite diplomatic peace initiatives.
