WHO reaches agreement on future pandemic response

Apr 17, 2025

Geneva [Switzerland], April 17: The agreement outlines measures to prevent future pandemics and strengthen global cooperation, including establishing an access and sharing system for pathogens, building geographically diverse research capacity, establishing global supply chains and logistics networks, and strengthening the resilience of health systems. According to the WHO, the agreement will be considered at the policy meeting of the World Health Assembly in May.
This legally binding agreement aims to strengthen the world's defenses against new pathogens after the Covid-19 pandemic that killed millions of people in 2020-2022. The agreement is also seen as an important victory for the WHO as the health organization is hit hard by a sharp cut in foreign funding from the United States. Reuters quoted Mr. Nina Schwalbe, founder of Spark Street Advisors (US), excitedly: "This is a historic moment and a demonstration that whether there is a US or not, countries are committed to working together and supporting the power of multilateralism."
