WFP accelerates humanitarian operations in northern Ethiopia

Nov 26, 2022

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), November 26: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on Friday said it has delivered over 2,400 metric tons of food, medical, nutrition and other lifesaving supplies to Ethiopia's Tigray region following the recent signing of a peace agreement.
The WFP said 96 trucks have transported over 2,400 metric tons of food, which is enough to feed around 170,000 people, as well as 100,000 liters of fuel into Ethiopia's conflict-affected Tigray region since November 15 when WFP resumed operations using all four reopened road corridors.
It said for the first time ever, the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service is conducting flight rotations to transport passengers and humanitarian cargo into Shire airport in Tigray.
The WFP, however, said the deliveries of assistance within Tigray are not matching the needs, adding that WFP and its cooperating partners urgently need access to all parts of the region to deliver food and nutrition assistance to 2.3 million vulnerable people.
WFP's accelerated humanitarian operation came after the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front earlier this month formally agreed to the cessation of hostilities after a two-year conflict.
