Weeks of erratic monsoon rains, floods kill over 100 in Pakistan

Islamabad [Pakistan], July 16: More than 100 people have been killed in weeks of erratic monsoon rains and flash floods in Pakistan, officials said on Tuesday, amid warnings of more rough weather ahead for the South Asian nation.
The rains that started from the north-west in June have now spread to the entire country, triggering flash floods and causing the inundation of cities, the national disaster agency said.
Most of 111 deaths recorded were caused by collapsing roofs and walls as old structures crumbled after weeks of heavy rains, the agency said in the latest update late on Monday.
At least 53 children were among the dead.
More than 200 people were injured, most in the central province of Punjab, where streets and roads in several cities remained under water for hours on Tuesday, the agency said.
The meteorological department has warned that more heavy rains in July and August would cause rivers to swell, flash floods and inundations.
Pakistan, a country with a massive population of more than 240 million, is one of the most vulnerable nations to the impact of the climate change, according to the United Nations.
More than 2,000 people were killed by flooding and subsequent diseases in Pakistan in 2022 when a third of the country was submerged by water.
Thousands of people die, houses collapse and roads and bridges are swept away every year by heavy rains and flooding across the Himalayan regions of South Asia including Pakistan and India.
