US-led mediators urge humanitarian pauses as Sudan civil war rages on

Aug 22, 2025

Nairobi [Kenya], August 22: US-led mediators in Sudan's civil war have called for humanitarian pauses in the conflict that has been raging since April 2023, triggering the world's current worst humanitarian crisis. "With the situation in Sudan worsening and humanitarian needs reaching critical levels, urgent action is needed by the conflict parties to protect civilians and allow and facilitate humanitarian access to those in need," the ALPS coalition said. The ALPS group includes the US, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, as well as the United Nations and the African Union.
"Civilians continue to pay the highest price for this war," they said, stressing the need for de-escalation particularly in Sudan's North Darfur and the Kordofan regions to enable aid to reach the population. More than 12 million people have been displaced in Sudan since the outbreak of the civil war in April 2023, triggered by a power struggle between de facto leader Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
