US envoy Barrack lauds Lebanon's response to disarming Hezbollah

Jul 08, 2025

Beirut [Lebanon], July 8: US envoy Thomas Barrack expressed satisfaction on Monday with Lebanon's response to Washington's proposal to disarm the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia during a visit to Beirut.
"I'm unbelievably satisfied with the response," said Barrack, who also serves as the US ambassador to Turkiye and special envoy to Syria, after meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
"I am grateful for the Lebanese response; it came after careful consideration and reflects various important factors," Barrack said.
The proposal comes in the wake of a recent war between Israel and Hezbollah, which left the group significantly weakened. Barrack emphasized that the United States is not setting deadlines or imposing mandates.
The Lebanese government had presented a well thought-out plan, he told reporters. Exactly what the Lebanese plan looks like has not yet been made public. According to a post on X, President Aoun presented "ideas for a comprehensive solution" against the backdrop of the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah which was brokered by the US.
