US doesn't 'have to be there' for NATO: Trump

Mar 29, 2026

Washington DC [US], March 29: President Donald Trump on Friday questioned US support for NATO after accusing the alliance of failing to assist Washington in the war with Iran.
"We would have always been there for them, but now, based on their actions, I guess we don't have to be, do we?" Trump said in Miami. Trump sharply criticized the alliance for not standing by the US in the war with Iran. "I think a tremendous mistake was when NATO just wasn't there," he said.
He said the US spends hundreds of billions of dollars each year on the security of its allies. "Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us?" Trump asked.
