UN Security Council condemns Rwanda for eastern Congo conflict

Feb 23, 2025

New York [US], February 23: The UN Security Council on Friday strongly condemned the ongoing offensive and advance of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
An offensive by the M23 rebel group against Congolese forces in and around the eastern city of Goma has killed thousands and displaced more than 700,000 since early January, according to the United Nations.
The Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the Rwanda Defence Forces to stop supporting the armed group and immediately withdraw from Congolese territory.
The resolution, submitted by French Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere, also strongly urged the DRC and Rwanda "to return without preconditions to diplomatic talks as a matter of urgency to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution of the protracted conflict in the region." (DPA)
