Trump's top diplomat pulls out of G20 foreign ministers' meeting in South Africa

Feb 07, 2025

Washington [US], February 7: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused South Africa of "anti-Americanism" and said he would not be attending a meeting of G20 foreign ministers later this month in Johannesburg.
Rubio made the announcement late Wednesday on X, where he accused South Africa of "doing very bad things." The complaints include "expropriating private property," focussing on the climate crisis, and using the G20 forum of the world's largest economies to promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
The foreign ministers of the G20 are meeting on February 20 and 21.
It would have been Rubio's first chance to meet some of his counterparts in person - including potentially Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. South Africa helms the rotating G20 presidency this year. (DPA)
