Trump 'hates predictions' about US recession

Mar 10, 2025

Washington [US], March 10: President Donald Trump received many questions in an interview on March 9 about tariffs and the impact of his policies on the US economy.
In an interview with Fox News, US President Donald Trump was asked if there was a risk of a recession in the US this year due to the White House's tax policies. "I hate to predict things like that. There will be a transition period, because what we are doing is so big. We are bringing wealth back to the United States. It will take time, but sometimes it will be wonderful," he replied.
During the March 9 interview, host Maria Bartiromo spent most of the time asking about Mr. Trump's tariff policies, the US president's quick reversal of some decisions, and how that worries business leaders.
"I think leaders will want to be predictable. Can you provide clarity to the business community?" Ms. Bartiromo asked Mr. Trump.
"I think it could be. But you know tariffs can increase over time and I don't know if that's something that's within our control," Trump said. He also mentioned falling interest rates when asked if the tariffs would increase inflation.
President Donald Trump 's tariff orders during his second term have often been adjusted. For example, he announced a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico in February, then delayed it for a month. When the tariffs took effect, the White House chief announced that he would exempt cars and other goods covered by the 2020 U.S.- Mexico -Canada trade agreement.
Also on March 9, NBC News interviewed US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Mr. Lutnick affirmed that there will be no recession in the US. "Those who bet against Mr. Trump are the same people who thought a year ago that Mr. Trump would not win (the US presidential election). You will see in the next two years, the strongest growth will come from the US," Mr. Lutnick said.
