Tel Aviv [Israel], May 20: Police in Tel Aviv said on Monday that a tourist has been detained after leaving a backpack containing materials for making Molotov cocktails outside a US embassy building.
The authorities have not disclosed the nationality of the 27-year-old, but Israeli media reported that the suspect is a German tourist.
The man approached security personnel in the early afternoon and an altercation ensued, police said.
He then spat in the face of one of the guards and left the rucksack in front of the building, police added.
Bomb disposal experts later found flammable substances and glass bottles inside the bag.
The suspect was located and arrested a few hours later. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to placing the rucksack outside the embassy building.
Israeli TV channel N12 reported that he told officers he had confronted the guards "out of anger at the American government."
