Thailand prepares for border conflict scenario

Jun 29, 2025

Bangkok [Thailand], June 29: The Bangkok Post newspaper yesterday (June 28) quoted Commander Phanpakdee Phatthanakun of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) declaring that the force's fighter jets are ready to take off within 5 minutes if a conflict breaks out.
Speaking before the Thai parliament, Commander Phanpakdee said the Military Council has approved a contingency plan to promptly respond to scenarios occurring at the border. In addition, Thailand's Center for Border Affairs Management (CBAM) confirmed that the security situation along the border with Cambodia remains stable, with no significant changes.
Also yesterday, the Khmer Times quoted Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen as urging the people of the country to unite with the government, actively participate in and fully support the armed forces in efforts to strengthen national defense capabilities. Mr. Hun Sen also mentioned the clash between Cambodian and Thai soldiers in the unmarked border area with Thailand in Chong Bok, Nam Yen district, Ubon Ratchathani province (Thailand) bordering Cambodia's Preah Vihear province on May 28.
As tensions continue between Cambodia and Thailand over the border, a group of 143 Thai scholars have submitted a petition calling on King Maha Vajiralongkorn to replace Prime Minister
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, according to The Nation . One of the reasons the scholars presented was a recording of a private conversation between Hun Sen and Paetongtarn that was made public by Cambodia on June 18. A wave of protests also took place in Bangkok yesterday, with thousands of people demanding that Paetongtarn resign, partly because of the recording.
