Switzerland blocks US military flights over country citing neutrality

Mar 16, 2026

Geneva [Switzerland], March 16: Switzerland has blocked the United States from flying two military aircraft over its territory due to the conflict in Iran, the government said.
Swiss authorities cited the country's neutrality laws, which prohibit overflights by parties involved in the conflict for military purposes. The US request concerned two reconnaissance planes. However, requests for one maintenance flight and two transport flights related to the Iran conflict were approved. Swiss officials said overflights for humanitarian or medical purposes, such as transporting the wounded, are permitted, as are flights not connected to the conflict.
