Severe forest fires in the US and Brazil

Sep 11, 2024

Washington [US], September 11: AFP news agency quoted US officials on September 9 as saying that many serious fires had occurred in western states. In Los Angeles, California, a fire on September 8 burned down nearly 500 hectares of forest. Previously, on September 5, this city had a fire that destroyed more than 8,000 hectares of forest land.
Another fire was reported in Nevada, forcing the evacuation of at least 12,000 people in Reno. US authorities have issued heat warnings since last week, with temperatures in some areas of southern California exceeding 43 degrees Celsius. The US National Weather Service said the combination of high temperatures, dry vegetation and gusty winds increases the risk of serious wildfires.
Another American country, Brazil, has also recorded fierce fires in the Amazon rainforest and many other areas. Smoke from the fires has affected much of Brazil's territory and spread to neighboring countries such as Argentina and Uruguay. The air quality monitoring system IQAir showed that Sao Paulo, Brazil, topped the list of the world's most polluted major cities on September 9. Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, a famous place with many majestic waterfalls near the capital Brasilia, has lost about 10,000 hectares of vegetation due to forest fires in recent days. The forest fire situation in Brazil is said to be unlikely to change without regular rain, which is unlikely before October.
