Senegalese national political dialogue opens to strengthen democracy

Dakar [Senegal], may 29: A national political dialogue opened Wednesday in Senegal with the main goal of bringing together all stakeholders in national life to engage in a collective reflection on necessary reforms to strengthen Senegalese democracy and meet the deep aspirations of the people.
The dialogue, which will continue until June 4, is being held at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center in Diamniadio, about 30 kilometers from the capital Dakar.
Speaking at the opening, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized that the event, organized "in a time of peace and outside of any electoral deadlines," offers "a unique opportunity" to reflect with "serenity and clarity" on the future of the country's political system.
"This is the value of a dialogue held in peaceful times, not to defuse socio-political tensions, but to write even more beautiful pages in our national political story," he said, noting that Senegalese citizens "had the opportunity to actively contribute to this reflection by submitting more than 13,000 proposals on the Jubbanti platform," launched on May 9 as a prelude to the national political dialogue.
The general facilitator of the dialogue, Cheikh Gueye, called on participants to show "selflessness, clarity, attentiveness, and a commitment to collectively building a new pact."
Several former prime ministers, ex-heads of national institutions, political leaders, religious and traditional authorities, as well as members of civil society, trade unions, former parliamentarians, private sector actors, and media professionals are taking part in the event.
