Russian combat jet crashes in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region

Moscow [Russia], July 2: A Russian fighter jet has crashed in the Russian Volga region of Nizhny Novgorod. The Su-34 aircraft crashed during a training flight, the Russian Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.
According to the report, the crew failed to lower the landing gear during the landing approach. The crew then flew the fighter jet into an undeveloped area and the pilots ejected and survived the crash. The ministry said there was no damage on the ground.
The Sukhoi Su-34 is a modern two-seater fighter-bomber. The Russian armed forces put it into service just over 10 years ago. The Su-34 can fire cruise missiles and rockets and drop glide bombs. This makes it an important element of Russia's war against Ukraine. It only became known at the end of last week that Ukraine had succeeded in destroying two such fighter jets at a military airfield in the Volgograd region and damaging two others. (DPA)
