Apr 16, 2026

Moscow [Russia], April 16: Russia and Azerbaijan have reached "an appropriate settlement of the consequences, including the issue of payment of compensation," nearly 18 months after the crash of an Azerbaijani passenger aircraft, the foreign ministries in Baku and Moscow said.
No further details of the settlement were disclosed. The crash in Kazakhstan in December 2024 killed 38 people.
Twenty-nine others survived the crash near the city of Aktau on the Caspian Sea.
The aircraft, carrying 67 people, was damaged in mid-air while approaching the Chechen capital Grozny in the North Caucasus, where air defence systems were active in response to Ukrainian drone activity. The pilots diverted and attempted an emergency landing in Kazakhstan. Thirty-eight people were killed in the crash landing, and the aircraft was destroyed.
