Addis Ababa [Ethiopia], November 25: The Ethiopian government said over 183,000 refugees and asylum seekers residing in the country have benefited from educational opportunities, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate quoted Ethiopian Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) officials as saying late Wednesday.
According to figures from the RRS, Ethiopia hosts in excess of 878,000 refugees and asylum seekers from 27 countries mainly from neighboring countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.
"The government has been implementing access to education with partners. Currently, there are 54 primary schools, 85 preschools and 12 high schools for refugees and asylum seekers," said RRS Deputy Director-General Mulualem Desta.
Every year, about 1,200 to 1,500 refugee students join tertiary education or university, according to figures from RRS.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees recently said Ethiopia has a positive policy environment for refugee education, in which the country's 2019 Refugee Proclamation provides refugees with access to educational opportunities on par with nationals.
