Opposition largely absent as Azerbaijan elects new parliament

Sep 02, 2024

Baku [Azerbaijan], September 2: The Caucasus republic of Azerbaijan on Sunday elected a new parliament ahead of schedule, with little reported participation by members of the opposition.
The polls, originally scheduled for November, were brought forward because Azerbaijan is hosting the UN Climate Change Conference, which is expected to attract around 80,000 representatives from around the world.
The proceedings passed without incident, local media reported. There was initially no official information on the distribution of votes.
It is expected that the ruling party New Azerbaijan will again have the vast majority of the 120 members of the new parliament. The remaining seats were previously also held by lawmakers largely loyal to the government.
