Newcomers win big at Nairobi City Marathon

Jul 07, 2025

Nairobi [Kenya], July 7: The fourth edition of Nairobi City Marathon concluded on a high note on Sunday amid chilly weather that enveloped the Kenyan capital, with relative newcomers scooping prize money in all race categories.
Over 15,000 elite and amateur runners from more than 70 countries and regions - including 13,000 Kenyans and 300 Chinese participants - took part in the race, which coursed through the Nairobi Expressway.
Benson Murkomen, a 30-year-old from northwestern Kenya, won the men's full marathon, finishing in two hours, eight minutes and 37 seconds.
Murkomen's victory secured him prize money totaling 3.5 million Kenyan shillings (27,000 U.S. dollars), a record amount compared to the previous three editions.
"It was an exciting race. The course was smooth, and the weather was quite friendly since I did not experience serious bumps. I am prepared to participate in future Nairobi city marathons," Murkomen said.
In the women's full marathon, 26-year-old Emily Chepkemoi from northwestern Kenya emerged from a crowded field to scoop the top prize, crossing the finish line after two hours, 25 minutes and 52 seconds.
Kipchumba Kiyeng Evans, 22, won the men's half marathon, while 24-year-old Nelvin Jepkemoi won the women's race.
First held in May 2022, the Nairobi City Marathon has attracted elite runners from Kenya and across the world, cementing Kenya's status as a hub for long-distance races, said Jack Tuwei, president of Athletics Kenya.
