Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol may be subject to forced interrogation

Aug 01, 2025

Seoul [South Korea], August 1: The Seoul Central District Court, South Korea on July 31 issued a new arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, allowing prosecutors to forcibly bring him in for questioning after he repeatedly refused to appear in court upon summons.
According to Yonhap, special prosecutor Min Joong-ki's team plans to send an assistant special prosecutor, a prosecutor and an investigator to the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, south of the capital, on the morning of August 1 to question Mr. Yoon.
Prosecutor Min's team is investigating allegations that Mr. Yoon and his wife interfered in the nomination of candidates for the 2022 parliamentary by-election through a self-proclaimed power broker, Myung Tae-kyun.
Yoon's lawyers had previously said the former president was unable to comply with the summons due to his deteriorating health. His lawyers said they had delivered his medical records, medical examination papers and doctor's diagnosis to the detention center on July 31. In a statement to the press, the lawyers said the former president had received limited medical examinations at the detention center, and that Yoon planned to undergo eye surgery in August due to the increasing risk of blindness.
In addition to the investigation, Mr. Yoon is also being investigated for allegations related to his decision to declare martial law in December 2024, a move that led to his impeachment by the National Assembly and his removal from office by the Constitutional Court. Mr. Yoon was arrested in January and released in March. He was detained again in early July amid concerns that he might destroy evidence.
