Microsoft prepares to cut more than 6,000 employees

May 14, 2025

Washington [US], May 14: Microsoft Corporation (USA) continues its policy of reducing staff when it announced that it will reduce 3% of the total number of employees at the enterprise.
According to The Guardian on May 13, the latest report in June 2024 showed that Microsoft has 228,000 employees, so a 3% workforce cut would mean more than 6,000 people losing their jobs at this leading technology corporation.
Microsoft 's announcement said the layoffs will occur at all levels and in all geographies, but will be focused on management. Microsoft has offices and subsidiaries around the world, with about 55% of its workforce based in the United States.
"We continue to make organizational changes to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace," Microsoft said in a statement on May 13.
This is Microsoft's largest layoff since it cut 10,000 employees in 2023. Over the past year, the company has cut more than 3,000 employees in the video game and cloud services sectors.
The latest layoff announcement comes just weeks after Microsoft reported strong sales and earnings that beat Wall Street expectations for the first quarter of 2025, a result that investors saw as a balm during a turbulent time for the tech industry and the U.S. economy.
Microsoft CFO Amy Hood also hinted at a reduction in executive-level staff in a speech on April 30. "We are focused on building high-performing teams and increasing agility by reducing the number of managers," Hood said. Since the beginning of the year, Microsoft has also reduced hundreds of employees based on performance reviews.
