Merz stresses responsibility towards Europe in Christmas address

Berlin [Germany], December 25: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz underscored his government's commitment to ensure peace and security prevail in Europe, in his Christmas video message posted on X on Wednesday.
"In these months and years, it's about the peace, about the security and about the prosperity of our entire continent," Merz, who has emerged as an ardent supporter of Ukraine, said.
"In this spirit, we feel ourselves committed to Germany and Europe. It depends on us," he added.
The government would do its duty and would work with patience and persistence to advance Germany's interests, he said.
In his address lasting a little over two minutes, Merz looked back on an eventful year that saw him take the helm of Europe's biggest economy following February's elections.
