Louvre thieves reportedly bungled initial breach of display case

Oct 24, 2025

Paris [France], October 24: Burglars who broke into the Louvre museum in Paris on Sunday initially failed to open the display cases with angle grinders, the Le Parisien newspaper reported on Thursday, citing museum surveillance footage.
The perpetrators finally managed to break small openings in the cases with other tools and pull out the jewellery by hand.
In the process, they damaged Empress Eugenie's crown, which they lost while fleeing, the paper said.
The Louvre was evacuated and shut down on Sunday morning after four masked thieves broke into the Apollo Gallery, home to France's remaining crown jewels.
They made off with eight pieces of jewellery once owned by French queens and empresses, with an estimated value of ?88 million ($102 million).
According to Le Parisien, the CCTV footage also shows that the alarm systems worked perfectly and immediately. (DPA)
