Lavrov rejects claim Russia threatens Greenland

Jan 21, 2026

Moscow [Russia], January 21: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday rejected claims by US President Donald Trump that Moscow poses a security threat to Greenland.
"We have nothing to do with this issue," Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.
He said he had no doubt that officials in Washington understood that Russia doesn't harbour such plans, adding that Moscow was nonetheless monitoring developments surrounding Trump's push to take control of Greenland.
"This is undoubtedly a serious geopolitical situation," Lavrov said. Trump has framed its acquisition as part of a growing strategic contest in the Arctic involving powers such as Russia and China, as well as a way to secure access to critical minerals.
Lavrov drew parallels between Trump's ambitions for Greenland and Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, saying Ukraine's Black Sea peninsula was no less important to Russia's security than Greenland was to the United States. He said Trump was basing policy on his own moral standards rather than international law. (DPA)
