Israeli minister makes historic official visit to Sudan

Jan 27, 2021

Jerusalem (Israel), January 27: Israel said on Tuesday that an Israeli ministerial delegation arrived quietly in Sudan's capital Khartoum, marking the first official Israeli visit to the Arab country in North Africa.
The delegation included Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen, who headed the delegation, and head of Israel's National Security Council Meir Ben-Shabbat and other security officials, the intelligence ministry said in a statement.
Cohen met with Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, head of Sudan's ruling sovereign council, and Sudanese Defense Minister Yassin Ibrahim and other government and military officials, according to the ministry statement.
The officials discussed regional security stability and economic development, local Israeli media reported.
The visit came after Sudan and Israel announced in late 2020 an agreement to normalize their relations. Sudan was the third Arab country, after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, to establish diplomatic relations with Israel as part of the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords.
