Iraqi premier says ending US-led alliance role necessary for stability

Jan 19, 2024

Baghdad [Iraq], January 19: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani on Thursday pushed for an end to the contested presence of a US-led international alliance fighting Islamic State militants, saying it is necessary for his country's stability.
"Daesh no longer poses a threat to Iraq," al-Sudani said in televised remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State.
The US-led alliance against the Islamic State was founded after the radical group overran large swathes of northern Iraq and neighbouring Syria in 2014.
Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State in December 2017. In 2021, Iraq said most coalition combat forces had already left and a group of advisors would replace them to support Iraqi security forces.
Iraq and the United States have agreed to move the coalition forces to a non-combat role. (DPA)
