Immediate action required to avert famine in northern Gaza: UN

Nov 11, 2024

Geneva [Switzerland], November 11: The UN agency for Palestinian refugees says the humanitarian situation in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating and "famine is imminent in areas within the northern Gaza Strip"
UNRWA said immediate action is required "within days to avert and alleviate this catastrophic situation".
"Immediate, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access and a ceasefire now are needed more than ever." Meanwhile, Activists demonstrated in the capital of South Korea, Seoul, in front of the United States embassy against Washington's support for the Israeli war on Gaza, video verified by Al Jazeera shows.
Protesters marched through the streets while raising Palestinian flags, then stopped in front of the US embassy building, the footage circulating on social media showed. Demonstrators also shouted slogans against the war in Gaza and US support for Israel, including: "America is a terrorist" and "Palestine is free from the river to the sea" and "Stop the genocide." Arab and Muslim leaders have begun arriving in Saudi Arabia for a summit scheduled for Monday that will focus on Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon, according to Saudi state media.
The Saudi state-run Al-Ekhbariya news channel broadcast footage of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati landing in Riyadh.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are among those also scheduled to attend.
The Saudi foreign ministry announced the summit in late October during the first "international alliance" meeting, pushing for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Attendees will "discuss the continued Israeli aggression on the Palestinian territories and the Lebanese Republic and the current developments in the region," the official Saudi Press Agency said.
The summit comes one year after a similar gathering in Riyadh of the Cairo-based Arab League and the Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), during which leaders condemned Israeli actions in Gaza as "barbaric". (Agencies)
