Mexico City [Mexico], April 15: Authorities in Haiti have arrested seven officials following a deadly stampede that killed 25 people at a historic fortress in the north of the country, police said on Monday.
Those detained include five police officers from the northern municipality of Milot and two employees of the national heritage protection institute. They are being held and questioned, the national police said, without specifying the allegations.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Citadelle Laferriere in Milot, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The arrests followed a visit to the scene by a special unit of the criminal police as part of the investigation. Large numbers of young people, including children, had gathered at the site for an event reportedly promoted on social media. Heavy rain then triggered panic, according to media reports.
