Oct 17, 2024

Athens [Greece], October 17: Four migrants including two children were killed in a boat accident north-east of the Greek island of Kos, Greek broadcaster ERTNews reported on Wednesday, citing the coast guard. Twenty-seven people were rescued, but two women and two children aged 3 and 5 years old reportedly could not be saved. In a separate large-scale operation south of the island of Crete, 98 migrants were rescued, while authorities were still searching for 10 missing people. The latest incidents came three weeks after three women and one girl died when a rubber dinghy carrying 30 migrants capsized amid strong winds off the island of Samos. The number of refugees in Greece has increased this year compared to last year. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), around 42,000 migrants entered the country from the beginning of the year until the end of September. Last year, the figure was 41,500. (dpa)
