Florida prepares for massive evacuation ahead of hurricane

Oct 08, 2024

Florida [US], October 8: As Hurricane Milton approaches land, the US state of Florida is preparing for the largest evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017, according to ABC News. Hurricane Milton is forecast to strengthen to a Category 4 before weakening slightly to a Category 3 and making landfall in Florida on October 9.
The US uses a five-level hurricane scale, with Category 3 storms having winds of 178-208 km/h. The storm has the potential to cause more damage than the recent Hurricane Helene, which killed more than 230 people in six US states.
Florida officials were still working to clean up the damage from Hurricane Helene yesterday. Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 51 of the state's 67 counties and urged residents to stock up on essential supplies.
