Estonia tells Russia it wants stolen buoys

Mar 21, 2025

Riga [Latvia], March 21: In its ongoing border dispute with neighbouring Russia, Estonia has once again demanded the return of buoys it says Moscow stole from the waters of the Narva River that separates their countries.
"We emphasize that Estonia's territory is inviolable and the removal of buoys from Estonian waters is unacceptable," the Estonian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, referring to a diplomatic note it presented to Russia.
In May 2024, Russia had removed 24 of 50 floating buoys used by Estonia to mark the shipping routes without prior consultation. The Narva River forms the borderline between the two countries and also marks the eastern external border of the European Union and NATO. Tallinn has repeatedly protested against the removal of the buoys.
In this new note, the Estonian Foreign Ministry said Tallinn considers it necessary to place buoys again this year in view of the upcoming shipping season and would like to resolve the issue in a constructive manner. (DPA)
