Chinese researchers' report reveals varied soil composition on the moon

Sep 18, 2024

Beijing [China], September 18: The first tests of soil samples from the far side of the moon show it has a different type of soil than found on the moon's earth-facing side, according to a report published by Chinese researchers on Tuesday.
The samples, which came back to Earth with the Chang'E-6 mission, have a much lower density than those from the previous Chang'E-5 mission on the Earth-facing side, the scientists say in a report published in the Chinese National Science Review on Tuesday.
Based on the size of the grains, the researchers also assume a different composition of the soil.
According to the experts, the sample contained different types of rock, including basalt, which occurs locally on the moon and provides evidence of the history of volcanism there. (DPA)
