Cargo ship attacked in Strait of Hormuz

May 04, 2026

London [UK], May 4: A cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz has come under attack by several small boats, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Sunday, citing the captain of the northbound merchant ship.
The latest incident in weeks of attacks that have undermined global oil flows occurred 11 nautical miles west of the Iranian city of Sirik, according to the British maritime body, which said all crew members were safe and that no environmental impact had been reported.
No group initially claimed responsibility for the attack on the bulk carrier. Since the start of the Iran war, ships have repeatedly come under attack in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, which has been attacked by the US and Israel, has largely brought shipping through this crucial transport route to a standstill through attacks and threats. The US has in turn imposed a naval blockade on Iran.
