Canada announces plan to strengthen border security with the US

Dec 19, 2024

Ottawa [Canada], December 19: Reuters reported yesterday that four Canadian ministers on December 17 announced a border security plan that they presented to the incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
Under the plan, Canada would beef up border security with the United States with helicopters, drones, surveillance towers and sniffer dogs, as well as a "joint strike force" to target transnational organized crime.
Canada is under pressure to tighten border security with the United States after Mr. Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico if they do not stop the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States illegally. U.S. authorities arrested more than 23,000 people near the U.S.-Canada border in the 12 months ending in October, more than double the previous year, but a fraction of the 1.5 million people apprehended near the U.S. -Mexico border during that time.
