Aug 23, 2025

Gaborone [Botswana], August 23: Botswanan President Duma Boko on Friday called for the adoption of modern technologies to transform agriculture into the backbone of the national economy.
Speaking at the National Agricultural Show in Gaborone, the country's capital, Boko stressed the need for substantial investment in farming, stronger support for farmers, and a shift in mindset toward treating agriculture as a strategic priority.
"We must develop, we must make agriculture the revolutionary engine of our economy," he said, highlighting the government's commitment to working with farmers to reshape agricultural policies, strengthen institutions, and unlock new opportunities within the sector.
He identified challenges such as climate change, recurring droughts, global economic shocks, and weak extension services as persistent barriers. He also pointed to the slow adoption of modern technologies, poor infrastructure, and limited financing options as key obstacles to growth.
Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture Edwin Dikoloti emphasized the importance of unity, discipline, and shared responsibility in building a resilient food system, as well as the need to invest in research, innovation, and sustainable practices that can drive entrepreneurship and long-term growth.
Held under the theme "Enhancing Agricultural Productivity through Utilization of Modern Technologies," this year's exhibition runs from Aug. 18 to 24, drawing farmers from across the country and showcasing more than 1,000 small livestock and over 300 cattle.
