Aleppo sees third day of clashes between Syrian army and SDF

Damascus [Syria], January 9: Heavy clashes between Kurdish-led forces and government troops continued in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo for a third day on Thursday.
The fighting is the worst seen in Syria's second-largest city since the overthrow of long-time ruler Bashar Al-Assad at the end of 2024, Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told DPA.
State news agency SANA quoted Aleppo's Central Response Committee as saying it had received around 142,000 displaced people from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighbourhoods, as well as nearby residential areas, including about 13,000 on Thursday alone.
A spokesman for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Farhad Al-Shami, said the government figures were exaggerated.
According to local authorities, temporary emergency shelters have been set up in Aleppo and surrounding areas, while injured residents remained trapped in affected neighbourhoods that were declared military and restricted zones by the Syrian army a day earlier. Since Tuesday, at least 12 civilians have been killed.
