Ukrainian president, NATO secretary-general discuss Ukraine's NATO membership

Jun 13, 2021

Kiev (Ukraine), June 13: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday held a phone conversation with Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg about the conflict in eastern Ukraine and its NATO membership.
Zelensky informed Stoltenberg through the phone about the situation in eastern Ukraine, according to the press service of the president's office.
Zelensky said that he hoped the upcoming NATO summit would confirm NATO's open door policy and also its decision at the Bucharest summit in 2008 that Ukraine will become a NATO member.
NATO membership is one of Ukraine's foreign policy priorities. In February 2019, the Ukrainian parliament adopted amendments to the constitution, securing the country's aspiration to join the alliance.
In June 2020, NATO has recognized Ukraine as an Enhanced Opportunities Partner, along with Australia, Finland, Georgia, Jordan and Sweden. Each partner has an individual relationship with NATO based on areas of mutual interest.
