The West rushes to add weapons to Ukraine

Jan 07, 2023

Kiev [Ukraine], January 7: The United States and Germany have decided to send armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine in the context of the Russian ceasefire being questioned by the West.
According to Reuters, the United States and Germany announced on January 5 that they would send armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine. This information was made in a joint statement by US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after a phone call earlier on the same day. "The Ukraine conflict is at a critical juncture and we must do everything we can to help Ukraine fight Russian forces," Biden said.
The statement said that the US will provide the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle while Germany will provide the Marder infantry fighting vehicle to Ukraine. It is not yet clear how many Ukrainian armored vehicles will be received. However, Reuters quoted US officials as saying that the new US weapons package for Kyiv is expected to include about 50 Bradley fighting vehicles. Ukraine has repeatedly said that it needs 600-700 infantry fighting vehicles along with 300 tanks from the West to have a chance to break through increasingly fortified Russian positions along the front lines.
The Guardian considers this move a major change in Western military support for Ukraine. So far, the US and Germany have been very cautious about sending NATO equipment to Ukraine for fear that Russia will see this as an escalation of tensions. Therefore, although the US and Germany did not bring tanks, the decision to supply armored vehicles to Ukraine still plays a very important role.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron on January 4 announced that he would donate AMX-10 RC light tanks to Ukraine. An aide to Mr Macron said it was the first time Western-made tanks had been delivered to Ukraine. However, some experts believe that the AMX-10 RC is not enough to be considered a true tank.
