Sri Lanka detects another sub-lineage of COVID-19 Delta variant

Colombo (Sri Lanka), November 21: Sri Lanka's health officials said on Friday that that another sub-lineage of the COVID-19 Delta variant had been detected in the country named as B.1.617.2.104.
Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura Dr.ChandimaJeewandara told the media that this new variant was in addition to the B.1.617.2.28 sub-lineage of the Delta, which was detected in the country earlier in September.
So far, two sub-lineages of the Delta variant have originated in Sri Lanka, health experts said.
Sri Lanka has to date detected 554,459 positive COVID-19 patients since March last year and recorded 14,072 deaths.
