Montenegro deserves special EU treatment: Croatian President

Sep 17, 2021

Zagreb (Croatia), September 17: Montenegro deserves preferential treatment in approaching the European Union (EU), Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said after a meeting with his visiting Montenegrin counterpart Milo Djukanovic on Thursday.
At a joint press conference, Milanovic said that Croatia and Montenegro have good and stable relations. He stressed that Montenegro, along with Albania and North Macedonia, deserve preferential treatment in approaching the EU.
"Montenegro has begun the final negotiating chapter and is on the doorstep of the European Union," Milanovic said.
Croatia supports a modern, civic and open Montenegro, Milanovic said.
The Montenegrin President thanked Croatia for its support on its path to joining the EU. The European and Euro-Atlantic perspectives on the Western Balkan countries are extremely important for the stability of the entire region, he added.
"We are affected by a deficit of attention from the most important European political addresses," Djukanovic said.
Djukanovic was in Zagreb for his first official trip abroad since violent clashes over the inauguration of the new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church intensified ethnic tensions in Montenegro. His visit was brought forward due to these developments.
