Mexico's latest COVID-19 wave on the wane: Health Ministry

Aug 24, 2022

Mexico City [Mexico], August 24:Mexico's fifth wave of COVID-19 cases appears to be waning, though cases could rebound during the winter months, the Health Ministry's Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, said Tuesday.
Mexico has seen six consecutive weeks of declining COVID-19 cases, he said in presenting the latest pandemic update at a press conference in the National Palace in Mexico City.
The statistics showed "a very clearly established trend," Lopez-Gatell said, "so we are again moving towards a point of recession."
He warned, however, that the pandemic remains active around the globe and a new uptick in cases cannot be ruled out, especially in the coming colder months.
According to official data, hospital occupancy due to COVID-19 is currently at 6 percent in general, and at 2 percent for beds with ventilators.
Mexico registered its first case of COVID-19 at the end of February 2020 and as of Aug. 22 logged 6,977,780 confirmed cases and 329,103 deaths from the disease.
