Greece becomes climate change hotspot

Athens [Greece], October 25: Speaking before parliament on October 23, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned that the country was suffering from the worst climate conditions in four decades.
Greece has been hit by consistently higher-than-average temperatures, prolonged droughts and strong winds, Mitsotakis said . According to AFP, the number of forest fires in the region in 2024 was 9,101, up nearly 2,000 from last year, burning 44,000 hectares of forest. The fires also started earlier than usual this year. In addition, Greece has experienced its hottest summer since 1960.
In 2023, wildfires in Greece killed 20 people, with the fire in Dadia National Park considered the most destructive wildfire ever recorded in the EU.
