Jan 29, 2023

Paris [France], January 29: Members of the French Socialists party have elected incumbent Olivier Faure as the party chairman, ending a power struggle over the party leadership. They appointed his opponent Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, mayor of Rouen, as vice chairman, at a party conference in Marseille on Saturday. The elections are to enable the leadership of the former People's Party to work more effectively following a series of electoral flops.Faure, who has headed the party since 2018, was confirmed as chairman in a membership vote with 51.09% while Mayer-Rossignol gained 48.91% of the votes. The latter initially refused to accept the result, pointing to irregularities. The election focused primarily on the party's future strategy, in alliance with the Left, Greens and Communists. After providing presidents such as Francois Mitterrand and Francois Hollande in the past, the Socialists have been losing backing for several years. Socialist candidates were eliminated in the first rounds of the 2017 and 2022 elections, gaining only 6.35% and 1.75% of the vote respectively. (dpa)Source: Qatar Tribune
