Feb 04, 2023

Beirut[Lebanon], February 4: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Germany's KfW Development Bank, opened on Friday a new fish market in the northern Lebanese town of al-Qalamoun to support fishermen during the economic crisis.
The new fish market will allow fishermen to sell their products and serve more clients, especially in the hospitality sector, the UNDP said in a press release.
It will support 150 households dependent on the fishery by increasing their income, creating jobs, enhancing food security, and improving their overall livelihoods, the UN agency added.
As one of the most important sectors in Lebanon, the fishery employs about 6,500 persons whose income supports 100,000 people organized in five syndicates and 33 cooperatives, according to the Development Assistance Roadmap Portal in the Middle East (DARPE), a research portal.
