Turkey summoned Denmark's ambassador and accused his country of a hate crime for burning the Koran

Jan 28, 2023

Ankara [Turkey], January 28: Turkey ordered Denmark's ambassador to the foreign ministry in Ankara and accused his country of supporting a "hate crime" after an anti-Islam activist burned two copies of the Muslim holy book the Koran in Copenhagen today in an independent act of protest.
Ultra-right activist RasmusPaludan, a dual citizen of Denmark and Sweden, has already enraged Turkey by burning a copy of the Koran in Sweden on January 21, exactly a week ago, and today in Denmark, in front of a mosque and in front of the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen.
Paludan, moreover, promised to do the same thing every Friday until Sweden is accepted into NATO.
Sweden and its neighbor Finland want to join the North Atlantic military alliance because of the war in Ukraine, whereby both have renounced their decades-long policy of neutrality, however, their approach must be approved by all member states, and Turkey has made it clear that it will block Sweden , partly because Paludan burns copies of the Koran.
Even before that, Ankara had conditioned the two countries' admission to NATO on the demand that they deal with armed Kurdish rebels and other organizations that Turkey considers terrorist.
As reported by the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, the Danish ambassador was instructed to come to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where officials of the host country expressed "strong condemnation" that Denmark "allowed this provocative act (burning of the Koran) which clearly constitutes a hate crime." .
The ambassador was told that "Denmark's attitude is unacceptable" and that Turkey expects the permit to be withdrawn, reported the Anadolu Agency.
In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called Paludan an "Islamophobic charlatan" and condemned the fact that he was allowed to stage his protest.
"Showing tolerance for such heinous acts that offend the feelings of millions of people living in Europe threatens the practice of peaceful coexistence and provokes racist, xenophobic and anti-Muslim attacks," the statement said.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loke Rasmussen told Danish media that the incident would not affect the "good relations" between Denmark and Turkey, and added that Copenhagen intended to discuss Denmark's freedom laws with Ankara.
"Our task now is to talk to Turkey in the conditions that prevail in Denmark with our open democracy, and that there are differences between Denmark as a country and our people and then about individuals who have sharply different points of view," said Rasmussen.
