Taiwan's TSMC to build chip plant in US

May 16, 2020

Taipei (Taiwan), May 16: Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC says it plans to build a new factory in the US state of Arizona.
The company said construction of the cutting-edge facility would begin in 2021, with production targeted to start in 2024.
TSMC is to invest about 12 billion dollars in the plant, which will be the company's second manufacturing site in the United States.
TSMC is one of the world's biggest chipmakers, and a major supplier to US tech giants such as Apple.
In a statement on Friday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the facility will make the United States more economically independent from China.
He said the announcement comes at a critical juncture, with China seeking to dominate cutting-edge technology and control certain industries.
