European court slaps Hungary with €40,000 fine in refugee death

Feb 03, 2023

Paris [France], February 3: The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has sentenced Hungary to almost €40,000 ($43,630) in damages in connection with the death of a refugee, the court announced on Thursday. The case was brought by a Syrian man who, together with his brother and other refugees, including a family with three children, wanted to cross the Tisza river from Serbia to Hungary by boat in 2016. They were helped by smugglers.
The plaintiff said the Hungarian border guards wanted to push them back to Serbia. The guards used tear gas and threw stones, and police dogs were released when he tried to go ashore, he said.
His brother drowned trying to swim back to the Serbian shore, he said. Hungary denied this account. (dpa)
