African engineers resolve to support AfCFTA implementation

Oct 09, 2021

Accra ( Ghana) Oct 9: The Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO) resolved here Friday to support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement to help boost free trade across the continent.
In a resolution passed at the end of a five-day conference, FAEO noted that the role of engineering "is important to the realization of the objectives of AfCFTA, the African Union's (AU) Agenda 2063, and the Sustainable Development Goals."
For this reason, the resolution said the continental engineering federation would take necessary steps to institutionalize its relationship with AfCFTA, the AU, and the governments of all African countries.
"We shall actively engage the AfCFTA secretariat and heads of member states to help in delivering the infrastructure required to ensure free trade across Africa," the resolution said.
The resolution added that FAEO would harmonize engineering codes and standards across the continent and assist the various African governments in creating an engineering framework for Africa's development.
"We already have an agreement with AfCFTA, and we will now sign a memorandum of understanding to operationalize that agreement," FAEO President Carlien Bou-Chedid told a press briefing.
